The collection contains two letters from Boon while serving in the U.S. Congress. The first letter, 1-21-1833, is to Levi Woodbury, Secretary of the Navy, recommending James H.H. Lands for the Navy. The second, 1-9-1839, is to James K. Paulding, Secretary of the Navy, renewing the application of John P. Walker.

Author and naval officer. A close friend of Washington Irving, Paulding collaborated with him to produce the satirical periodical, Salmagundi. He also wrote poetry, fiction, and a popular biography of George Washington. President Martin Van Buren appointed Paulding Secretary of the Navy in 1839, in which post he served until 1841. Boon, Ratliff, 1781-1844

A native of North Carolina, Boon lived in Kentucky before moving to Warrick County, Ind. in 1809. The county seat was later named after him. In 1813 Boon began his career in politics as county treasurer, and moved to the state level where he served in the House and Senate, and as Lieutenant Governor and Governor.
